I'm looking at getting my first iPod and I like the new 60GB color one. My
only problem is my G3/400 DV Firewire iMac has this software:-

OSX 10.1.5
iTunes 4.7.1
QuickTime 6.3.1
iPhoto 2.0

Can any owners of this particular iPod confirm if it will work with my
software setup?

It won't. ALL newer iPods *require* 10.2.8 and the attendant components -- Quicktime, iTunes of that vintage or better -- to work.

does anyone have a newer OSX disc they could maybe sell me?

Panther is widely sold for practically nothing these days. Check around your popular UK aftermarket Mac dealers, or online ... on on Ebay UK.

On a sidenote, is anyone getting good results with an FM transmitter thing to play the iPod through the car radio? Kensington are saying that theirs is
the best - are there any satisfied users out there?

My best advice is to get one that is not "pre-set" to a given frequency.

All I know is that it looks look really cool and I'd like
to be able to get one to work with my current setup without too much hassle
or software expense. Thanks!

You shouldn't really think of these updates as "iPod expense" -- you should have done these updates yourself a long time ago. 10.2 came out over two and a half years ago, and 10.3 was by any account a huge step forward from that in features, speed and general usefulness. I'm not one to jump on upgrades the day they come out, but when the "bleeding edge" folk come back with uniformly positive reports, you're only cheating yourself the longer you don't upgrade.

Claiming that the Macintosh is inferior to Windows because most people use Windows is like saying that all other restaurants are inferior to McDonald's.
