You need to rip the machine apart to replace it, but it's not terrible,
and there are Apple Service Manuals floating around to guide you
through it complete with step by step photos. I have an original
DVD-ROM drive which is a working pull from an iMac DV available for $35
if you're interested. While you're in there, you might as well upgrade
the hard drive if you plan on keeping the machine for any length of
time. I own two iMac DVs myself and I've upgraded the drives on both.
80GB and larger drives are pretty cheap these days. Occasionally
Staples runs deep rebates on ATA-133 drives. That's the way to go.
