Look in the /Applications/Utilities folder. If there is an X11.app in
that folder, just double-click it before starting The GIMP. If not,
you probably need to use one of the OS install tools (I forget what
it's called, but others here will know) to load the X11 package from
your OS install CD/DVD.

Normally X11 will startup when a program requires it without having to
start it first. There are several versions of "Gimp", be sure it's the
one for OSX and not the one that requires "Fink" or "Darwin Port" to be
installed before using.
