I've never used Aperture, but it is not competition for Photoshop, no more
than iPhoto is.  Aperture is meant to help you sort through and manage
the dozens (if not hundreds) of photos you may shoot in a session.

Suppose you're a sports photographer, you shoot a few hundred shots during
the course of a game.  At the end of the day you need to sort through them
all, many groups of which look nearly identical, and pick two or three
that make it to press ... then you want to keep everything for future use.
