As long as you update OS 9 to 9.2.2 (Including the iMac Firware Upgrade) you
should be able to boot to an external firewire drive with no problems.

However, what programs won't work on OSX (using Classic Mode) now should
work in the very near future (except those that make direct hardware calls).

One additional note, it is not advised to use a 7200/10000 RPM drive in an
iMac as they run much hotter than the 5400 that comes in the iMacs. There is
insufficient cooling/thermal dissipation to accommodate the new drive. I
tried it on my iMac G3 "Tangerine" 400Mhz. using a 7200 RPM Seagate drive
and running Ubuntu 5.10. With Ubuntu sitting idle the hard drive got so hot
I couldn't touch it, and that was with the case open. I had to take the
drive out and put the original 5400 Maxtor back in.

I would suggest you put the 7200 RPM 30GB in the Firewire enclosure and
install OSX on it. At least until you can find a way to increase the cooling
in the iMac to accommodate that drive.
