Now that you mentioned it, I think the capability I described is
accessed through "FinderPop".
If you were an OS 9 user, you may have used FinderPop in the past.
The author, Turlough O'Connor, left Mac OS 3 years ago, but recently
purchased a Mini and has come back to the fold. He says that he
missed the FinderPop features, so he has written an OS X version. It
is in Beta, but I have had not a lick of trouble with it. You have
heard of shareware and freeware, well he calls this "pintware". Here
is his explanation:

You do not have to pay anything for FinderPop. That said, however, if
you really can't live without it, you can — only if you want to and
can afford to — get me a couple of beers by way of appreciation for
all the evenings and weekends I’ve put into it. You can do so by
donating online with Kagi for $8 — enough for two pints of Beamish
(yum!) Click the pint on the left to bump Turly’s tab.

Version Tracker gives it 5 stars. I find its features, and those in
FruitMenu and TinkerTool to be indispensible.
