Greetings, all.

My wife called me today to report that our 25-month-old iMac (sans Applecare) display was dark. I could VNC into it, so I knew it was fine - just that the LCD backlight had died. Later I couldn't VNC into it anymore, and when I got home it wouldn't boot. Not even into target disk mode!

So... I'm wondering what might have happened. I suspect a total meltdown - LCD and motherboard - but why might that have happened?! There is a clicking sound coming from the dome, when I try to boot it. I can't tell if it's the hard drive or the DVD drive, but I ran a SMART test just this past weekend, and it came back clean.

Has anyone else ever heard of this?

This particular machine is a 17" 1.25 GHz G4. I had a 512MB stick in the user-accessible slot, but removing that did not allow it to boot into TDM.

WEIRD! And: THIS STINKS!

Do you feel my pain? :(

Daniel
