You can either go the whole netboot route or you can just use a retail OS9 CD to install OS9 "over" OSX. If i remember right it warns it will wipe out the newer OS but it doesn't

In the ongoing project to restore a friends iMac DV500 I have
successfully installed a "new" HDD, setup Mac OS X 10.3 and applied
all of the software updates.

The current firmware level (Boot ROM Version) is 4.1.3F2

I have the 4.1.9 firmware update but it wont install because Mac OS 9
Classic is not installed.

I've browsed the OS X 10.3 CD's (full retail version I think) for the
OS 9 install but I cant find it...

THREE QUESTIONS:

Should I even worry about upgrading the firm ware from 4.1.3 to 4.1.9?

Is Classic on the OS X 10.3 CD or do I need a separate install CD for
Classic?

Will I have a problem installing Classic with OS X already installed?
I DID formatted the HDD with the OS 9 Drivers.

Thanks
