MIne does that too - I usually just give it a little help by running a piece of paper or another disc past the left hand corner of the drive slot, triggering the release lever in there. This pops enough of the disc out to grab it. I guess it is the release mechanism that is failing, probably same on mine - and replacing the optical drive just isn't much fun on an iMac G3 so I live with it until I can't live with it.
