I, too, had iTunes 9.1.1 running on my Pismo, and all hell broke loose when I updated. I downgraded to 8.2.1, and my Pismo is a much happier camper, since half of iTunes 9 features did not work in it anyway.
I would sync the Touch with my MDD if I were you. And, AFAIK, it can't be upgraded to OS4, but I might be wrong --I don't have a Touch or an iPhone to test it. By the way, be careful when you downgrade. I haven't been able to access my library since I trashed version 9.2.
