You are referring to the start-up chime or bong, correct?

I've had Macs that didn't have an audible bong at start-up and I never did figure out why. But I never had any problems with my non-bonging Macs so I didn't obsess over it.

There are also some apps that let you set the start-up bong to be silent, perhaps someone has done that along the way?
