Definitely get it up to 10.2 at least, this will eliminate a host of weird issues that could cause this in 8.6

On a machine with 256 MB of RAM? It's just not enough for OS X. Expect to spend a lot of time waiting while memory pages get juggled between RAM and disk. I'd try 9.2.2 first.
