First, which model? Which specs?
(model year, CPU speed, Ram quantity, graphic card, OS version...)
IMO, every time we talk about problems (especially hardware ones), we should
first state our computer configuration - it gives a much better context for
understanding what's going on.

First thing off the top of my head, is the graphic card.
I read several iMacs (usually the ones with more powerful cards) suffered
from issues like freezes, crashes, screen artifacts.

Then, overheating:
- can an iMac get dust inside? If yes, accumulated dust could impede
cooling;
- maybe the CPU (or something else, like the GPU) lost "contact" with its
cooler; in this case, cleaning it and re-applying thermal paste is usually
enough.

Lastly, I think the screen has nothing to do with your problem. It sounds
like overheating, most likely.
