I’ve got no idea how to test one, I’ve got an optical drive cleaner around (you can get one just about anywhere: Target, WallyWorld, Best buy, Office Depot or Staples, Walgreens, Biglots, even.)
I suspect picking up a new external one is probably a good idea, though, since you use it a fair bit. These have the great advantage that you don’t have to disassemble your iMac to fix it, and you can use them on computers that don’t have optical drives too.
