In Finder, select Preferences under the Apple menu. Make sure ‘Hard disks’ is checked; by default in newer versions of OS X it’s unchecked. Now the hard drive will show on the desktop.
Under that is ‘New Finder Windows show:” set it to Macintosh HD (or whatever your hard drive is called) or your computer.
