I have no idea about the 1024k thing. This is the KB article about the
50 user alias

Question/Problem: How many addresses can an IMail alias point to?

Answer/Solution: A Standard Alias can point to a maximum of four e-mail
addresses. A Group Alias (called List Alias before version 5.0) points
to a file that can contain a maximum of fifty e-mail addresses. There is
no set limit for the number of addresses on a list server list.

If you have more than 50 addresses you will need to use a list server
list in IMail. (Version 7.0 does not limit Group Aliases to 50).

Yes, a real List is a better tool for distribution lists, and yes, a
List is a little tougher to administer. I'm not aware of the 50 address
alias limit being changed, nor of a change to the 1024 char limit in the
alias admin field. If someone confirms that IMail has changed that
limit, we will adjust the templates accordingly.
