This is indeed possible; don't give up yet.

You need to use Imail's peering feature (see the KB) and customize the
Exchange   Server's  220  greeting  message  ('220  mail.uhl-tr.nhs.uk
Exchange  ready') to have another line with the Imail peer greeting in
it  ('220  X1  NT-ESMTP  Server  mail2.uhl-tr.nhs.uk'). This will make
Imail look to Exchange to check for additional local addresses.

Note  that  the Exchange box (not the Imail box) needs to support SMTP
VRFY.  If this is a security problem for you, switch the boxes so that
the Imail box is your external MX exposed to the Internet.
