Don't forget that Imail and SQL do not play well wogether with MDAC 2.7. Make sure you are still in the MDAC2.6spX range.

When SQL server is initially installed, it defaults to the "Local System Account" to autostart the service whenever the server boots up. Try to use the W2K/NT "administrator" account to autostart the service. I faced a similar problem when I installed IMAIL and the External DB in different machines and I resolved it by using the above solution. I do not know whether it can be applied if both IMAIL and SQL is in the same machine.
