Try this ... When SQL server is initially installed, it defaults to the "Local System Account" to autostart the service whenever the server boots up. Try to use the W2K/NT "administrator" account to autostart the service.
I faced a similar problem when I installed IMAIL and the External DB in different machines and I resolved it by using the above solution. I do not know whether it can be applied if both IMAIL and SQL is in the same machine.
