Are these people just hangin' out in forums waiting for lost souls to
convert.  If QMail is so good, then hang out there.  I don't hang out in the
QMail forums trying to convert people to IMail.

Why are you messing around with IMail to start with?  Instead of trying to
write your own, etc. the answer is FreeBSD running QMail.  It will
outperform IMail many times over and is free.  None of the problems you
mention either.
