In Outlook Express under SMTP authentication settings
you may have to set the login options under advanced.
I know it says that it will use the primary login information
however it does not seem to work all the time.

Subject: [IMail Forum] smtp authentication
We just recently set up imail and I had a question I hope someone has an
idea for. I was wondering if anyone else had encountered any problems
getting usersnames from an ipless virtual host to authenticate properly
when sending email with third party email clients, like: Outlook, Netscape,
Eudora. I am able to get usernames, from ipless virtual hosts, passed to
the imail pop3 server fine in programs like Outlook using the % sign,
joeblow%virtualhost.com. But it never accepts the username like that when
sending mail. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
