Hello all,
I've spent all morning working with Netscape and Outlook and still have no
dice when trying to send mail from a user on an ipless virtual host. I've
tried every combination of # or $ or & or % or * with the username. I've
tried user%virtualhost.com and user%mail.virtualhost.com, still no dice.
If anyone has any suggestions, or could give an example of the usernames of
a virtual host they are telling their clients to put in for the smtp server
settings on programs like Outlook or Netscape I would be greatly
appreciative.
There is one other thing I thought I might ask too. I was looking around
ipswitch's KB and ran across an article about people gettting a 550 User
Unknown error. In the article they suggest telneting to ones smtp server
and doing a "vrfy" to make sure the user existed. I decided to go ahead
and give this a shot, and came up with a problem. I can telnet to my smtp
server, but I can't talk to it to give it the "vrfy" command to see if a
user exists. it connects, and tells me I'm connected, and then it just
hangs there. This may be a silly question, but why would the smtp server
have a record of a different user than say the imail administrator anyway?
For a ipless virtual host, shouldn't the email address listed for a user in
the imail administrator and the username listed on the smtp server be the
same? I'm just sort of curious as to why ipswitch suggests telnetting to
ones smtp server, rather than just looking at it's administration program.
