Will,
Thanks for your suggestion about checking the DNS to see if that is causing
my "MX Connect Fail" errors.
I just checked in my log files to see if the IP addresses that iMail is
contacting for delivery of mail are correct. They seem to be. For instance,
doing an nslookup on erols.com using its primary name server
(domain01.dns.erols.net) shows the following:
erols.com MX preference = 100, mail exchanger = mx05.erols.com
erols.com MX preference = 100, mail exchanger = mx06.erols.com
erols.com MX preference = 100, mail exchanger = mx01.erols.com
erols.com MX preference = 100, mail exchanger = mx02.erols.com
erols.com MX preference = 100, mail exchanger = mx03.erols.com
erols.com MX preference = 100, mail exchanger = mx04.erols.com
erols.com internet address = 216.164.100.159
erols.com nameserver = domain01.dns.erols.net
erols.com nameserver = domain02.dns.erols.net
erols.com nameserver = offsite01.dns.erols.net
domain01.dns.erols.net internet address = 207.172.3.20
domain02.dns.erols.net internet address = 207.172.3.21
offsite01.dns.erols.net internet address = 206.138.112.20
mx05.erols.com internet address = 207.172.3.245
mx06.erols.com internet address = 207.172.3.248
mx01.erols.com internet address = 207.172.3.241
mx02.erols.com internet address = 207.172.3.242
mx03.erols.com internet address = 207.172.3.243
mx04.erols.com internet address = 207.172.3.244
In the example from my iMail log that I included in my message, it shows:
07:22 23:51 SMTP-(000001CE) Trying erols.com (0)
07:22 23:52 SMTP-(000001CE) MX connect fail "207.172.3.245"
07:22 23:53 SMTP-(000001CE) MX connect fail "207.172.3.248"
07:22 23:53 SMTP-(000001CE) MX connect fail "207.172.3.241"
07:22 23:54 SMTP-(000001CE) MX connect fail "207.172.3.242"
07:22 23:55 SMTP-(000001CE) MX connect fail "207.172.3.243"
07:22 23:56 SMTP-(000001CE) MX connect fail "207.172.3.244"
So iMail went right through the list of MX preferences for the erols.com
domain and couldn't make a connection with ANY of 6 equally weighted mail
servers.
The same is true of several other mail deliveries that were attempted
unsuccessfully: when I check the DNS records, the MX records show up the
same as listed in my iMail logs. So it seems like iMail has the proper
addresses to connect to, but just can't connect.
Maybe I am misunderstanding your reference to DNS as a source of the problem
though. Thanks if you have a chance to get back on this.
