Actually, IMail is not stopping, but in a state when there is as many smtp32
processes as will be allowed (each taking reasources!) and when a new message
comes in, a new smtp32 will start, but immediatlely shut down. Given some
time, IMail will recover and begin processing the messages again. To sped this
up and findout why it is happening, I'd first 'kill' smtp32. Now go to the
Queue and find the messages that have zero tries. Highlight and click 'Send
One'. If this is a local delivery, you should get a 'Message delivered' popup.
If external, it will take longer, but should see same message. If you get a
'..requeued..' message, then it could not be completely delivered and has been
put back for another try. Now try on messages with larger number of tries.
The ones with ~ or _ in name/extension are those that were in process when the
'kill' was issued. Try these last.
Any that show large number of addresses in To, should also be tried later in
the process (they take more time!). But do try them. If succesful or requeued,
then the file will go away, or get its name/extension changed back to
normal.
Have you any List Servers? An incorrect setup could cause a 'loop' and that
can cause large number of messages, very quickly. Attemping to deliver, could
cause more mail, that causes more delivery (smtp32) processes, ..... Find out
which list it is and fix ASAP.
