We are a tiny little operation with only a few machines and certainly not
what you would call a creek let alone "mainstream".
But a few weeks ago we set up NetWork Ice on one of our machines to monitor
possible intrusions - just to see what was happening to us. We hadn't had
any real problems but just were curious.
Since we did this I have totally changed my position about security and
hackers. We are scanned repeatedly and often from various sources. We've
equipped all of our machines with Network Ice programs now.
We are scanned on just about every possible machine every day and we've had
several serious attacks including one denial of service attack that went on
for some time on one server. My own workstation is fairly hard to get to
because of my router configuration but it is being scanned at least 2 or 3
times each week. We've had relatively few SMTP attempts but we have had
some.
I admit that before we began this monitoring I had a more benign view of
hackers. Now my feeling is that very stringent laws need to be enacted and
I hope that prosecution becomes very agressive. The hackers seem to think
they are doing something good. If they consider what their actions mean to
others they apparently ignore those feelings entirely.
I think this is already a serious problem but based on my little experience
so far I think it is going to get a lot worse. I don't think anyone should
do anything that encourages these hackers in any way.

My concern here is, are we teaching hacker wantabees how to go about
discovering holes and what to do once they are found. A lock won't keep a
dishonest man from your wealth. It will keep the boarderline men from
becoming dishonest because the temptation of a cheap thrill is not present.
