I have an OpenBSD server with postfix running as a incoming gateway MTA
(i.e. the IMGate approach) which greatly reduces the amount of mail that
IMail has to handle.

We just ran a report on some very high-volume IMGate servers (several 100K legit msgs/day). Using only reject unknown recipients, SAV, and greylisting (ie, no RBLS, no content-scanning, etc), the reject rate was 71%, which takes a huge load off the more expensive content-scanning machines, which could be either a second rank of dedicated boxes or a loaded-up mailbox server like IMail.
