Steve,
to answer your question, the web client store session information in process.
Web gardens run each instance in a separate process.
When you switch processes the session info is lost.

uncheck box (with default.aspx in the list box next to it) or
IClient properties| ASP.Net Tab| Edit Configuration Button| Custom Error Tab|
Default Redirect URL (with Error.aspx in the text box next to it)?
