We have recently installed IMail, replacing our existing
Post.Office installation.
IMail 6.0.2 is installed on an AMD K6-2 platform. IMail
resides on the D: drive, NT on the C: drive. C: in an
ATA-type device (not sure exactly which flavor) and D:
is a SCSI drive with an Adaptec controller. The system
has 256MB of RAM and is servicing about 8,000 users.
The majority of these are on our primary domain, but we
do handle mail for about 500 domains using the virtual
approach.
IMail's SMTP and POP3 processes seem to work fine. They
handle significantly greater loads than Post.Office with
no real strain placed on the system. However, we have a
couple of very serious problems.
First, IMailAdmin periodically shows up as a process in
the task manager, even when it is not running. We have
disabled LDAP, including setting the LDAP files to read
only (as per Ipswitch support). We are not using the
remote admin tool. When IMailAdmin shows up, it consumes
significant system resources (memory and CPU time) and
causes slowdowns that are evident in POP3 queries and
SMTP sends. Any input as to the why of this problem will
be most appreciated.
More significant, however, is that the WebMail component
doesn't work. In our testing, it ran fine. When we went
to full load, it dies periodically.
The amount of time before failure varies. We've had it
run overnight (light loads, obviously) but we've also
seen it fail after only 15 minutes (heavy load). The
failure mode varies. Sometimes it fails with a Dr.
Watson error, sometimes it simply stops responding even
though it still appears in the process list and even
seems to be getting some CPU time.
We've uninstalled and reinstalled (several times).
We've downloaded the most recent templates.
We've made several adjustments to maximum work threads
and to the thread pooling settings.
It still fails.
We've been running solidly for more than 24 hours with
the WebMail component disabled. We're generally pleased
with IMail but definitely need to get the WebMail
portion working.
