I got my FreeBSD/postfix "Relay Hub" appliance up and running over this (too long, ouch) weekend. But if you decide to tackle this project, my website (maybe ready for next weekend, after I get the relay hub broken in this week) will guide you through both setting up FreeBSD, installing postfix, and configuring postfix as a filtering relay hub in much shorter time. For those of you coming from NT and GUI-only backgrounds, I think you'll really enjoy the power and immediate efficiencies of implementing another (ie, like Imail) world-class, professionally engineered product such as posftix on FreeBSD, esp when the results will offload so much work from your staff. (and it's free!!) I caught my first spammer Monday morning, brought down in the crossfire of both being an "unknown" ip address and a known open relay at mail-abuse.org's reverse zone. postfix can mail a "pretty printed" transcript of the mail rejection session (e.g., to my spambox). My relay-hub is called "mail gateway 1", mgw1.meiway.com. Note my "UCE trespasers" banner. In the transcript, the "melodie" host in Deutschland is relaying mail supposedly from email.com, plus melodie's ip, 195.52.10.67, fails reverse lookup: ========================================= >Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 12:46:47 +0100 (CET) >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Mail Delivery System) >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Postmaster) >Subject: Postfix Relay Hub SMTP server: errors from unknown[195.52.10.67] >X-RCPT-TO: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > >Transcript of session follows. > > Out: 220 mgw1.MEIway.com - ESMTP - Postfix Relay Hub - ATTN: UCE trespassers > will be pursued. > In: EHLO melodie.mediaman.de > Out: 250-mgw1.MEIway.com > Out: 250-PIPELINING > Out: 250-SIZE 10240000 > Out: 250-ETRN > Out: 250 8BITMIME > In: MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> SIZE=940 > Out: 250 Ok > In: RCPT TO:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Out: 554 Service unavailable; [195.52.10.67] blocked using > relays.mail-abuse.org, reason: Open relay problem - see > <URL:http://www.mail-abuse.org/cgi-bin/nph-rss?195.52.10.67> > In: QUIT > Out: 221 Bye > >No message was collected successfully. ================================================ I'm putting up a closed mailing list for this project, so if you'd like to come along, privately mail me your subscription request.
