postfix was built to replace by sendmail, much faster and much more secure. 
postfix is modular, with modules being optimized for given tasks, whereas 
sendmail is one monolithic pgm.  You can read all the pages on-line at 
www.postfix.org in probably 30 minutes.

What I've done with FreeBSD is easily doable on Linux, since we're working 
with the postfix app on a stripped down version of the OS (nothing else 
installed) rather than futzing around with the OS.
