scanning a msg, including attachements, is heavy going. I've seen one
estimate that a mail system handling 1,000,000 msgs a day without AV
scanning would be able to handle on 100,000 with AV scanning. 90%
reduction in mail throuhput.

So if you intend on having any traffic at all, put the AV scanner on a
separate machine.

Typically, the AV scanner replaces the mail server as the data portion of
MX records, so the AV scanner becomes the mail gateway to Internet (in and
out). But AV scanners are known to be weak in the security area, ie,
becoming open relays, and having no anti-spam defenses at all. So the AV
machine ends up accepting all spam, and scanning it!, wasting resources and
maybe landing itself on a MAPS or ORBS open-relay blacklist.

One quite different AV product for NT is Mail Essentials @ www.GFIcomms.com.

If your aren't in a huge hurry, then I will be adding full AV scanning
facilities to my http://IMGate.MEIway.com project, using the $100
anti-viral scanner from www.KasperskyLab.com.
