We use a sonicwall box as a firewall.  This box has a "DMZ" port, which is
not on the local network, but not totally on the net wither.  My imail
server is on this port, and has a public IP, but in the firewall gui (Which
is SO easy to configure rules) you can set this up to allow pop and smtp and
icmp if desired and any other port/protocol combo needed.  It is great and
inexpensive.

(Jeez, you would think I work for them.
