You only need to stop/start the SMTP service, not "shut down" all of Imail, 
(if that's what you were doing).

If you happened to see my msg of yesterday, I discovered that SMTPD process 
that does SMTP AUTH has a different NT process id, pid, from the SMTPD 
process that is handling the rest of a given SMTPD session AND the SMPTD 
AUTH process kept the same PID all day.

This could explain why SMTP traffic in/out can keep moving, while SMTPD 
AUTH alone can die.

I'm still waiting for somebody suffering from SMTP AUTH hangs to work with 
me on a little PERL script I have to monitor for unresponding SMTP AUTH 
commands and automatically stop/start SMTP service.

ie, I have a solution to test, but I don't have the SMPT AUTH pb to test it 
with!!
