That is actually not a very good idea.  In a high volume client mail
interface situation, the LAST thing you want to do is depend on the network
architecture for performance.  Take it from experience.  I tried it, and it
just doesn't work.  
Now, if the message store was a high performance db (read: sql, oracle),
then you could remove the interface from the mail server, but until that
happens, don't even consider seperating the two.
POP3 and IMAP4 are great protocols, but they were not built for performance.
