Yeah, Sure enough connected to US West and sending through us.  Relay
problem.  Had them change their SMTP Gateway to US West and it fixed it all.

yes. If you were "open relay" then Imail would accept it and relay it.

The remote mail server is perhaps confused with a bad ip for the destinaton
or the sender is trying to relay through you. or maybe the whole d@mn mess
is spoofed, you can't trust headers or even ip addresses (that's why IMGate
reverses the sending MTA's ip address: to see if that ip has a hostname, MX
record, A record)
