How about MAPS RBL, DUL, and RSS too?  And DNS lookup of the sender's E-mail address?  
How about something that makes the "advanced spam protection" other mail servers offer 
look out of date?

Filters do have some good uses, but you are right, they have drawbacks and aren't 
great at catching spam (unless you have a lot of free time to update the filters).

Using a separate box as a gateway does have some advantages.  But, if you want to have 
it all on one server, and don't want to have to deal with Unix, there's a solution 
coming soon.
