Bill,
The content of that error message are such that it makes me think this is a
Winsock Error, probably number 10054 and it usually means that the remote
end disconnected (for some reason). Since NS says 'receiving', I suspect it
is happening when the user is attempting to connect to the POP3 or IMAP4
service, to read email. If this is true, then the SMTP Security settings are
not coming into play. Only if an error occured when attempting to 'send'
email, would the SMTP Security settings (and the client's, too) be
indicated.
Any network problem that could cause the connection to be damaged, corrupted
or terminated, is a possible cause for your error message. It is not likely
that IMail would close the connection (once established, IMail waits for
many, many minutes, before closing a connection) unless one of the 'Contol
Access' (IMAP4, POP3) settings were changed. 'Control Access' could keep any
IP (or group of IPs) from connecting to that service. In SMTP, this is how
one would block a known IP of a spammer (or other host that you do not want
to get mail from).
Does the user ever get connected to read his email? Did any server or client
settings, hostnames or IPs change recently? How about the network
connections for this group of users? A new router/switch or other hardware
added or modified recently? Can the users 'Ping' the mail server, by IP and
name? Can the user computers connect to the POP3/IMAP4/SMTP services of your
IMail machine, using the Telnet program and the right port number? Any
firewall/proxy added or configuration changed?
