That's just a router making Network Address Translation (NAT) with an IP of a DSL
connection, that can help all your machines go out to Internet, it also has got a
firewall inside, the firewall has some rules like:
From Port To Port Protocol Policy
any 1024:65535 mail.dom.com 25 tcp,udp Deny
This rule is not usefull for any of us, because no spam will able to connect to the
SMTP port, but all the mail machines from Internet will not be able too.
I think the best way is if you're an ISP, make relay for local address only, and
put all the addresses of your pool in the local address table of the Imail machine.
Of course, a firewall is always necessary.
The ping is just a packet of the ICMP protocol, like traceroute and error messages,
and can't be used to detect spamming-free machines, the only way is make a telnet to
port 25, and try to send a message "by hand", and see what the machine responds, you
can find more information searching for spam in any engine.

Yes, it can find SMTP services (it only need connect to
one, to say it exists) but typically, only on port 25
What is, when I would use a Firewall? We tested a product, called Linksys
Instant Broadband EtherFast Cable/DSL Router
(http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=142&grid=5) I can enable
something, where it doesn't answer to pings. I'm not sure, about pings to
open ports, but I think it will be a nice solution. Did somebody has some
experience with it?
BTW, if you would be so kind as to tell me where you found those
unauthorized copies of Ipswitch products, I would be most grateful.
