This is exactly what I've been experiencing since the last upgrade. I
thought it had to do with list processing but it occurs almost everytime a
large number of messages are dumped into the queue.
IMAIL then starts up a bunch of smtp processes which are never used.
In my case I can get it pumping again by sending a single message - any
message. But it stops the entire mail server from sending mail until I
initiate some action.
Very annoying.
If it has to do with bad messages I can't find them. When those smtp
processes come up they never do anything that I can see. I can't actually
make this happen every time but I can probably shut the service down 2 times
out of 3.
My short term solution is to monitor the queue.
