They use SMTP AUTH in their client mail programs.

no, IMail SMTP AUTH has been frustratingly flaky, combined with 
variations in how the browsers do SMTP AUTH.  Ipswitch made some 
progress with SMTP AUTH in 6.04 but they are not all the way there, 
and that remains your best chance today.  6.05 will be the solution?
