Thanks Thomas - this is very elucidating.... this does sound like it
would be the culprit. Is this the problem you're thinking of?:

To restate my situation, the IMail server I'm using is in the control of
my web hosting provider. (I'm also talking to them about this but this
forum is already much more helpful) I was given an "administrative"
account on the IMail server which I can use to manage mailboxes for my
domain. ("admin@[mydomain].com") Following your lead, I've tried using
that username for authentication, but no success. Any ideas? I feel like
this is the right track to be on...
