Sorry for the confusion.
The firewall denies access to the internal network but allows certain access
to the DMZ. The firewall in not the problem.
Some internal users use the Imail box as a gateway.
Some internal and external users connect to the Imail box directly using
POP3, IMAP or Web Mail.
At the moment I am struggling to set the system up to allow certain IP
addresses to use Imail as a gateway as well as allowing the local users to
send mail externally. I am able to allow one or the other but not both.
Thanks in advance for your help.

so the mail servers on the Lan use Imail as their gateway, and your
firewall only permits SMTP traffic with Imail?
>Despite trying many things I either leave the server wide open
you mean open at the firewall "pass all packets all ports" or within
Imail (relay for all)?

rejected at the firewall?
bounced by Imail? if Imail, list the imail log SMTPD seessions that
showing the bouncing.
Be much more precise about what's hapenening where under what
condions A vs B. Are you talking about your firewall or Imail?
