Hm - and I thought I KNEW Imail. I checked the documentation and I'm still
baffled. Worse, now I'm wondering if this mysterious SYSLOG service is in
fact the perfect target for a DOS attack.
Let me first get the facts straight:
a) if I let Imail log to a regular log file, the output will end up in
SYSmmdd.txt files.
b) if I let Imail log to the SYSLOG server, the output will end up in
LOGmmdd.txt files.
I'm too dense today - but then what's the point?
What's the difference if Imail write to one file name or the other file
name?
Does one log have more information than the other?
Is it formatted any differently?
Why go through the overhead of running the "SYSLOG" service - if the result
is just a different file name?
Feel free to just point me to the page number in the documentation that
answer this.
More importantly - is this a backdoor into my system, which I was previously
unaware of (someone could just send gigabytes of data to this service which
IMail will dutifully copy to disk until all space is exhausted!): So
can/should I disable the SYSLOG service to avoid it becoming subject to a
DOS attack? If so, which functions of Imail will it impact if I disable?
Best Regards
