I'm too dense today - but then what's the point?

From, mon dieu, RTFM:

Log Server causes messages to be sent to the Log Server IP
address specified on the Log Files tab.

This is sending logging data in RFC format across tcp/ip to a "log server". It has nothnig to do with logging to the Imail's local disk.

Feel free to just point me to the page number in the documentation that
answer this.

More importantly - is this a backdoor into my system, which I was previously
unaware of (someone could just send gigabytes of data to this service which
IMail will dutifully copy to disk until all space is exhausted!):

I don't get the impression that Imail is a log server, but a client to a tcp/ip log server.
