FYI, there is a file "EICAR. COM" that you can use to test virus scanners.
It is a very small file that does not really contain a virus, but virus
scanners will get triggered by the file. That way, you can safely test your
virus scanner without worrying that you may accidentally get the virus (it
can be quite dangerous "playing" with viruses, without an environment
properly set up for it). You can get it from http://www.eicar.org .

As they say at eicar.org, "Using real viruses for testing in the real world
[as opposed to a lab] is rather like setting fire to the dustbin in your
office to see whether the smoke detector is working. Such a test will give
meaningful results, but with unappealing, unacceptable risks.".

You can download the EICAR. COM file from http://www.eicar.org , or you can
run NOTEPAD and enter:
"X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*"
(without the quotes) and save it as EICAR. COM.
