My Imail server sends a moderate 20,000 messages per day. I also run two
lists on it. Since upgrading to 6.04 then 6.05a I have had MAJOR problems
with the queue getting clogged. I have thousands of messages waiting!
Ipswitch says this is a "known problem"
The problem starts when a message is undeliverable on the first attempt.
Imail looks to your SMTP settings for how many times to retry and how long
to wait. The problem is that it STOPS sending other mail until it can
complete the undeliverable message. If for example you set it to try 48
times at 30 minute intervals you have effectivly implimented a DoS attack on
your own server for 24 hours!
To solve this problem I have been forced to reduce my SMTP retries to 2 and
my Queue Timer to 5 minutes. Since those changes the server has been OK,
not great, but OK. The problem with these settings is that you get lots of
bounced mail.
I know we have some larger volume servers represented on this forum. My
question is what do the high volume guys set their retries and Queue Timer
to?
Thanks,
Joe
