Yep, familiar scam. It's just a way to get non-suspecting people to
register the .org/.net etc variant through THEIR company. (Now, it may be
sensible to do that for trademark protection reasons in GENERAL - but there
is no reason to do it as a reaction to that fax or even through THAT
company.)
The claims on the fax itself is simply bogus. IF someone had indeed "tried"
to register a domain name which is available, they simply would have
SUCCEEDED. There is no "courtesy" notification where other domain name
owners are first notified before a valid registration is accepted and
processed.
