I strongly agree.. We have had upwards of 300,000 e-mail accounts in an
IMAIL server. Though the web interface sucked so bad we went outside of
IMAIL to can our own. Then we find that using IMAP against the server just
didn't hold up.
And did we mention lack of server clustering?
Lack of an API for external servers, WEB etc..?
With that being said our cluster of machines now runs Solaris X86 with QMAIL
and QPOPPER and IMAP2000 from UofW and of course the IMP web interface from
www.horde.org
Guess what it is all free!
And better yet.. No more random locked mailboxes..
We now have over 1,000,000 mail boxes on these servers and guess what the
same machines that could barely keep up under the load at 200,000-300,000
Now of course the hardware is 4 Quad Xeon's in this cluster of machines and
you of course get what you pay for, that said we still use IMAIL for all of
our web hosting customers and they like the fact they can add and remove
their own e-mails with the interface it has.. Not pretty but it DOES work.
And honestly unlike what you stated we have NEVER had a random shutdown in
the 2.5 years we have run their software.
If you want something reliable you have to throw money at it.. Just ask
microsoft..
