It sounds like a miscommunication when IMail is "introducing" itself. It normally
sends an EHLO first (if not accepted, it then sends the HELO). It sounds like in case
#1 the remote machine may be accepting the EHLO but IMail thinks it was rejected, so
it sends the HELO. In case #2, it sounds like IMail may be sending the EHLO and
thinking it got an OK response back, so it continues, but the remote server didn't
really accept the EHLO.
If you send the log file line around that error message (starting with the connect
message), we might be able to get a better idea of why this is happening (and whose
fault it is).
