No, because his logs show that iMail was connecting to janus.minedu.govt.nz.
It's finding it, so it's not a DNS issue.

I have just looked up the MX records for minedu.govt.nz and it comes back
with    minedu.govt.nz.    7200    MX    50  janus.minedu.govt.nz

 Do you think the 50 could be causing the problem with IMail?
